About the Gender Detector API

Gender Detector works by analyzing the name provided and predicting the likely gender of the person. It uses a machine learning model trained on a large dataset of names and their associated genders to make the prediction.

What people use it for

When drafting automated outreach, sales platforms choose correct honorifics and greeting styles based on the predicted gender returned for each recipient.
Account Profile Onboarding
Assign default avatars and profile pronouns automatically when a user signs up by matching their entered first name against regional gender predictions.

Questions.

Common questions about the Gender Detector API.

Read the docs →
Does the prediction take country context into account?
Yes, you can pass an optional country code alongside the name. Because names can vary in typical gender association across different regions and languages, providing a country code allows the model to tailor its prediction to that locale.
Should I pass a first name or a full name?
Provide the individual's given first name. Surnames generally do not indicate gender and can interfere with the machine learning model's analysis, so isolating the given name produces the most accurate result.
What happens when a name cannot be matched to a gender?
The response includes a detected boolean flag. When Gender Detector cannot confidently determine a gender for an unfamiliar or ambiguous name, detected returns false.
How far does the Starter plan go for name lookups?
Starter provides 200,000 credits each month, which covers 100,000 name lookups at 2 credits per call. That works out to about $0.0003 per lookup or $0.30 per 1,000 names checked. The Free plan includes 100 lookups per month.
Can I use the predicted gender data in my commercial product?
Yes, commercial use is permitted on any paid plan. You can store and use the gender results to personalize emails, segment audiences, or enrich contact records inside your own application, provided you do not resell the raw data as-is.
