About the World News API

Feeds are read when a request needs them and kept for an hour, so headlines are at most an hour old. Each story lists the other outlets carrying it, with their headlines and links.

What people use it for

Morning Executive Briefings
Digest bots pull business and technology summaries each morning to deliver quick industry reading directly into team messaging channels.
Sports Fan Hubs
When match results break, community forums display new sports headlines and links directly to the original publisher.
Clinic Waiting Displays
Show recent health and science summaries within waiting room screens to keep patients updated on public health reporting.
Trading Desk Terminals
To track market developments, financial dashboards stream business headlines and source links next to active ticker quotes.

Common questions about the World News API.

Read the docs →
Which outlets and topics does it cover?
About 275 feeds from outlets in 29 editions, in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian: the BBC, The Guardian, The New York Times, NPR, CBC, Al Jazeera, DW and France 24, and El País, Infobae, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, tagesschau, Folha, g1, ANSA and la Repubblica among others, plus specialist outlets for technology, science, health, entertainment, crypto, gaming, cars and travel. Thirteen topics: business, entertainment, world, health, science, sports, technology, politics, environment, crypto, gaming, automotive and travel.
What is the difference between country and edition?
country returns stories about a country from any outlet: country=JP finds a BBC or Al Jazeera story about Japan. edition returns what outlets based in a country are running, about anything: edition=GB is the British press. Countries are read from each headline and summary, and a front-page story that names no country is taken to be about its outlet's own.
Why does one story list several outlets?
When outlets carry the same story it is returned once, led by the first outlet to publish it, with coverage counting the outlets and sources listing the others with their headlines and links. Ranking by coverage is what puts the biggest stories first. Grouping compares the wording of headlines and summaries, so two outlets that describe one event very differently can still appear as two stories.
How do languages work?
language picks the language stories are read in; it defaults to English, and with edition to that edition's own press, so edition=CH returns Swiss outlets in French, German and Italian. Headlines are returned as published, never translated, and stories are merged with other outlets in the same language. Topics and countries are tagged in every language; sentiment is scored for English stories only.
How fresh are the headlines?
Feeds are read when a request needs them and kept for an hour, so a story is at most about an hour old here; lastUpdated says when the feeds were read. If an outlet is slow or down, its last stored stories are served rather than holding up the response.
What does a paid plan add?
The free plan returns up to 10 stories per request. Paid plans return up to 50, the other outlets carrying each story (sources), the tone of each English story (sentiment), keyword search (q) and since to fetch only what is new.
Is it cheap enough to poll for headlines every hour?
Yes. Each request costs 6 credits, which works out to about $0.90 per 1,000 calls on the Starter plan. Starter includes 33,333 calls each month, which easily covers polling multiple categories hourly. The Free plan includes 33 calls per month for testing.
Can I display these news articles in a commercial product?
Yes, as long as you subscribe to any paid plan. Commercial use is allowed on Starter and above. You can display the headlines, descriptions, and links inside your application, but you may not resell or redistribute the raw feed data as a standalone service.
