Can I filter jokes by category or keyword?

No. The endpoint does not support query parameters or category filters. Each request selects a random joke from the curated list without any filtering options.

Do I need to pass any arguments to fetch a joke?

No. The Chuck Norris Jokes endpoint takes no required or optional parameters. A simple GET request returns a joke immediately.

Could the API return the same joke across consecutive requests?

Yes. Jokes are selected at random from the curated collection, so duplicates can occur across calls. If your application requires unique jokes within a single user session, keep track of recent joke IDs or text locally to prevent repeats.

What structure does the response come in?

Authentication

Send your key in the x-api-key header. That is the only auth step — no token exchange, and no per-endpoint scope to configure.

401 is the only auth verdict

A 401 means the key is missing, invalid or expired. A 403 means the key is valid but not permitted here — blocked by a key restriction or an IP allow-list. Running out of credits is a 429.
