What Each Lookup Returns

The fields you get back for one phone number

CapabilityAPIVerveNumverify
Validity, country, location and line typeBoth return whether the number is valid, its country and dialing prefix, a location where one is known, and a line type
VoIP line flagAPIVerve returns isVoip and a voip line type. Numverify's documented line types are mobile, landline, special services, toll-free, premium rate, satellite and paging
Disposable / temporary-SMS number flagFlags numbers published on public SMS-receiving sites, which anyone can use to pass an SMS check. Numverify's response has no such field
Time zones for the numberIANA time zones from libphonenumber's prefix data, useful for calling hours
Risk score and levelA 0-100 score combining validity, disposable, VoIP and line-type signals. On paid plans only
Carrier names for US and Canadian numbersNumverify's own example returns AT&T Mobility LLC for a US mobile. APIVerve's carrier comes from libphonenumber's allocation data, which has no US or Canadian carriers, so the field is null there

Formats & Parsing

How the number comes back, ready to store or dial

CapabilityAPIVerveNumverify
E.164 and national digitsNumverify's international_format and local_format, APIVerve's formatted.e164 and nationalSignificantNumber
Formatted national and RFC3966 outputAPIVerve also returns (415) 858-6273-style national formatting, +1 415-858-6273 international formatting and a tel: URI. Numverify's local_format is digits only
Extension parsing555-0100 x123 comes back with the extension in its own field
Validity checked against the country you expectAPIVerve's isValid checks the number against the country you send and isValidNumber against its own, so a valid UK number entered in a US form is caught

Pricing & Value

What it costs to run phone checks every month

CapabilityAPIVerveNumverify
20,000 checks a month for $29.99APIVerve Starter is $29.99/mo and covers 20,000 phone checks. Numverify's Basic plan is $14.99 for 5,000 requests, so 20,000 a month means its $59.99 Professional plan (50,000)
Same subscription covers 300+ other APIsThe APIVerve key also runs email validation, IP lookup and the rest of the catalog. A Numverify plan covers phone validation
Larger free monthly allowanceNumverify's free plan gives 100 requests a month (non-commercial). APIVerve's free credits cover about 20 phone checks and are for evaluation
The bottom line

APIVerve or Numverify?

Numverify and APIVerve's Phone Number Validator both answer the basic question: is this a real number, which country is it in, and what kind of line is it? Where Numverify pulls ahead is carrier data in North America.

Use APIVerve if

  • You're screening numbers at signup
  • You want VoIP and temporary-SMS numbers flagged
  • You want email, IP and 300+ other APIs on the same key

Use Numverify if

  • You need carrier names for US or Canadian numbers
  • You want the town a North American number belongs to
Read the full verdict

Its own example returns AT&T Mobility LLC and the town of Novato for a San Francisco-area mobile, and APIVerve returns no carrier for US or Canadian numbers and only the state for that one. If carrier names on US numbers are the thing you need, Numverify, or Twilio Lookup's paid line type check, is the better fit. APIVerve is built for screening sign-ups.

Every lookup flags VoIP lines and numbers published on temporary SMS sites, splits out extensions, and adds time zones and an RFC3966 format. Paid plans add a 0-100 risk score. Starter is $29.99 a month for 20,000 phone checks, and the same key runs email, IP and 300+ other APIs.

Numverify's smallest plan with that much volume is $59.99. Use Numverify when you need US carrier names. Use APIVerve when you need to know whether a number is safe to trust at signup.

Talk to us →
Is APIVerve a Numverify alternative?
Yes, for validating and screening phone numbers. Both tell you whether a number is valid, its country, location and line type. APIVerve adds VoIP and disposable-number flags, time zones, extension parsing and RFC3966 formatting, with a risk score on paid plans. Numverify is the stronger choice if you need carrier names for US and Canadian numbers, which APIVerve doesn't return.
How does Numverify pricing compare with APIVerve?
Numverify's pricing page lists a free plan with 100 requests a month, Basic at $14.99 for 5,000, Professional at $59.99 for 50,000 and Enterprise at $129.99 for 250,000, with per-request overage fees. APIVerve's Starter plan is $29.99 a month and covers 20,000 phone checks plus every other API in the catalog. Numverify costs less at 5,000 and at 250,000 checks a month; APIVerve costs less at around 20,000.
Does APIVerve return the carrier like Numverify?
For mobile numbers in most countries outside North America, yes. The carrier field shows the network the number range was first allocated to, such as Airtel in India or Optus in Australia, so a number ported to another network still shows the original one. US and Canadian numbers return no carrier. If you need carrier names there, Numverify returns them, and so does Twilio Lookup's paid Line Type Intelligence check.
Can APIVerve detect VoIP and disposable phone numbers?
Yes. Each lookup returns isVoip and isDisposable. VoIP comes from the number's line type in Google's libphonenumber data. Disposable means the number has been published on a temporary SMS-receiving site, where anyone can read its texts. Numverify's documented line types don't include VoIP, and its response has no disposable field.
Numverify vs Twilio Lookup vs APIVerve: which should I use?
Twilio Lookup's basic formatting and validation is free, and its Line Type Intelligence add-on costs $0.008 a lookup and returns line types including fixed and non-fixed VoIP plus a carrier name. Numverify bundles location, carrier and line type into one plan-priced call. APIVerve bundles line type, location, time zones and the VoIP and disposable flags into a flat monthly plan that also covers 300+ other APIs. If you already send SMS through Twilio, its Lookup is the natural fit. Otherwise pick the one whose fields match your check.
Do I have to send a country code with each number?
No, as long as the number is in international format starting with +. Numverify works the same way. A national number like (415) 858-6273 needs the two-letter country code. If you do send a country, APIVerve's isValid tells you whether the number belongs to that country, and isValidNumber tells you whether it is valid at all.
