Whoxy's real asset is its archive.

Use APIVerve if

  • You need today's record, read from the registry
  • You want EPP codes explained and transfer locks flagged

  • You buy lookups in large prepaid packs
Read the full verdict

It has recorded WHOIS since November 2012, lets you search for every domain tied to a name, company or email, and its prepaid packs drop to $1.00 per 1,000 lookups at a million. If you need past owners or a reverse WHOIS search, use Whoxy: APIVerve doesn't keep a crawled history, so it can't answer those questions. If what you need is today's record for a domain inside your app, APIVerve reads it from the registry over RDAP, explains each EPP status code, flags transfer locks, holds and privacy redaction, works out the domain's age, and adds IP and ASN lookups on paid plans.

It runs on a monthly plan with free credits to start, so there's no prepaid pack to buy first.

Common questions about switching from Whoxy to APIVerve.

Talk to us →
Is APIVerve a good Whoxy alternative?
For live WHOIS lookups inside an app, yes. APIVerve returns the registrar, dates, nameservers, explained EPP status codes, lock and privacy flags, registrant country and domain age from the registry's current record. If you need WHOIS history or reverse WHOIS search, Whoxy has those and APIVerve doesn't.
Does APIVerve have WHOIS history or reverse WHOIS like Whoxy?
No. Both need a database of past WHOIS records crawled over years, and Whoxy has been recording them since November 2012. APIVerve reads the current record from the registry each time you call, so it answers what a domain's registration looks like today, not who owned it before.
How does APIVerve's pricing compare to Whoxy's WHOIS API?
Whoxy sells prepaid packs: $10 for 5,000 lookups ($2.00 per 1,000), falling to $1.00 per 1,000 at a million and $0.40 per 1,000 at 25 million. An APIVerve WHOIS lookup costs 8 credits, so the $29.99 Starter plan's 200,000 monthly credits cover 25,000 lookups, about $1.20 per 1,000, with every other API on the same plan. At very large volumes Whoxy works out cheaper per lookup.
Does Whoxy have a free WHOIS API?
Only through its Free Whois API Program: 10,000 queries per API for verified students and 50,000 for 501(c)(3) non-profits, credited after your documents are checked. Everyone else starts with a prepaid pack from $10. APIVerve's free plan includes monthly credits for any developer to evaluate the API, with no card required.
Can I get the registrant's contact details?
Mostly not, from either service, because registrars now redact personal data. Whoxy returns full contact fields wherever the record publishes them. APIVerve returns the registrant country, the organisation when it isn't redacted, and an isPrivacyProtected flag, reading the registrar's RDAP record for .com and other thin registries.
Can APIVerve look up IP addresses and ASNs?
Yes, on paid plans. Pass an IP or an ASN instead of a domain and WHOIS Lookup returns the allocation range, network name, the registered organisation and its abuse and technical contacts from the regional internet registry. Whoxy's products cover domain names only.
