About the WHOIS Lookup API

WHOIS Lookup is a domain WHOIS API: it queries the registry for a domain name and returns its registration record (registrar, creation, update and expiry dates, EPP status codes and authoritative nameservers) plus domain age computed from the creation date. Paid plans extend it to IP address and ASN WHOIS.

What people use it for

Domain Portfolio Management
Domain portfolio managers inspect expiration dates and registrar details to schedule timely renewals before web properties lapse or drop.
Phishing Detection
Security teams flag newly created sender domains during user onboarding by reading domain age in days directly from the registration record.
Trademark Infringement Review
When auditing suspicious brand lookalikes, legal specialists identify the sponsoring registrar and nameserver hosts to route takedown notices accurately.
Vendor Infrastructure Auditing
Evaluate third-party vendor websites by verifying active domain status codes, current registration timelines, and authoritative nameserver delegations.

Questions.

Common questions about the WHOIS Lookup API.

Read the docs →
What would 10,000 domain lookups cost me?
Ten thousand lookups require 80,000 credits, which easily fits within the Starter plan for 200,000 credits per month. That works out to about $1.20 per 1,000 lookups, or roughly $0.0012 per call. If you only need to run tests, the Free plan includes 25 lookups every month.
Are trust scores and recent registration flags included on the Free plan?
No. The trust score, trust level category, and the 90-day registration flag are premium fields that require a paid subscription. Paid plans also unlock DNSSEC status, registrar abuse contact details, and the ASN and IP lookup endpoints. Any paid plan starting with Starter includes full access to every field.
Can I query IP addresses and ASNs as well as domain names?
Yes, on paid plans. Beyond domain names like example.com, WHOIS Lookup supports looking up Autonomous System Numbers such as AS15193 and individual IPv4 addresses. These queries return registration timestamps, registrar metadata, and current network status flags.
Does the API calculate domain age automatically?
Yes. Alongside raw creation, expiration, and update dates in ISO 8601 format, each domain lookup returns precomputed domain age in both days and years. The response also provides authoritative nameservers, registrar website URLs, and active EPP status codes.
Can I use this registration data inside a commercial cybersecurity product?
Yes, commercial use is fully supported on any paid plan. You can integrate domain age, registrar details, and risk flags directly into your internal security workflows or user-facing applications, provided you do not resell or redistribute the raw data as a standalone dataset.
Does the WHOIS API return the registrant's name and contact details?
Not the name or contact details: since GDPR most registrars redact them. Domain lookups return what the record still publishes, which is usually the registrant country and, when it isn't redacted, the registrant organisation (often a privacy service), plus an isPrivacyProtected flag. For thin registries such as .com, the API follows the registry's link to the registrar's RDAP server to read them. Paid plans add the registrar's abuse contact email and phone, and IP and ASN lookups return the network's registered organisation and abuse contacts where the regional registry publishes them.
Can I run a bulk WHOIS lookup on a list of domains?
Yes. Send up to 200 domains in one request to POST /v1/whoislookup/batch and you get one result per domain back in order, each with the same registrar, dates, status codes and domain age fields as a single lookup. Each domain is billed as one lookup and counts toward your plan's per-minute rate limit, so lists longer than that limit come back with rate-limited items to retry.
Does WHOIS Lookup include historical WHOIS or reverse WHOIS search?
No. Every call reads the current record from the registry, so there is no history of past owners and no search for all domains held by one company or email. Those need a crawled database of past records, which vendors such as WhoisXML API and Whoxy sell. WHOIS Lookup is for checking the registration as it stands today.
