About the Leet Speak API

Pass any text string along with an encode or decode mode parameter. The engine replaces letters with numeric or symbolic equivalents when encoding, or restores standard Latin letters when decoding. Every response returns the converted text string, the applied mode, and the exact count of modified characters.

What people use it for

Content Moderation
Detect banned keywords hidden in community forum posts by decoding obfuscated characters into standard text before running profanity checks.
Username Duplicate Prevention
To catch duplicate registrations trying to bypass unique name rules using number substitutions, identity services normalize gamer handles before saving.
Gaming Chat Filters
In-game chat systems convert incoming player messages back into standard vocabulary to flag abusive behavior across multiplayer lobbies.
Retro Profile Styling
When generating novelty badges or cyberpunk titles, social applications convert usernames and status messages into stylized character strings.

Questions.

Common questions about the Leet Speak API.

Read the docs →
Can I convert both into leet speak and back into standard text?
Yes. Leet Speak provides separate endpoints for encoding standard text into leet speak and decoding leet speak strings back into normal text.
Can I use this to decode leet speak found in user submissions?
Yes. You can submit obfuscated text to the decode endpoint, which parses the leet characters and returns readable, decoded plain text.
Which conversion modes does the API support?
Two: encode turns plain text into leet speak, and decode turns leet speak back into plain text. The mode parameter is required on both endpoints and must be one of those two values.
Are both the text and mode parameters required for every request?
Yes. Both the text string and the mode parameter are marked as required on both the encode and decode endpoints, and both must be provided for the request to run.
What would converting 50,000 text strings a month cost me?
Converting 50,000 strings uses 100,000 credits, which uses half of the 200,000 monthly credits on the Starter plan. At 2 credits per call, paid usage works out to about $0.30 per 1,000 calls on Starter. You can also test with up to 100 free calls per month.
